Interview: The Questions and Answers Draft

ELLIOT TURNER (Made it up randomly)
Age: 18
Family: Mum, Dad and Little Sister
Nationality: British
Religion: Christian
Q: How do you feel about the huge success you’ve got so far?

Elliot: Well, I know it sounds cliché but it’s like a dream, and I’m just worried that I’ll wake up any second and still be in my room with my guitar rocking out and getting nowhere. This year has been major for me, with the album coming out and the tour coming up it’s just blown my mind, with all that’s gone on I’m thinking of going for a nice relaxing holiday after the tour is over.

Q: With the new album, ‘Crusade’ how did you come up with the name?

Elliot: Wow, that’s ones hard. With the album it was about stating who I was personally and what I wanted to bring to the world of music. With the name it shows my religious side, coming from a religious Christian background you wouldn’t expect a pastor’s son to be rocking out on a guitar and singing. But no, my family were feeling supportive, my dad even bought me my first guitar when I was 11 and helped pay for my lessons, I owe him a lot. Going back to the name, again like I said to do mostly with my religious background but also to do with the journey I wish to take, making my kind of music.

Q: When you were younger, were you a popular kid at school?

Elliot: Most people you know believe I was because me playing the guitar but no, when I was younger I was extremely shy and always nervous around girls. I would never think of getting up on stage and performing but after I started playing the guitar and at the age of 13 when I was getting pretty good at it my confidence grew. All I can say to kids out there who are nervous and don’t think they can accomplice their dream because of how shy they are, just go for it, that’s what I did and here I am now, living my dream.

Q: So now that your 18 are you glad you have more independence and freedom?

Elliot: Yes and No, before when I started out on the album I was 17 which meant I was not an adult yet, so for the interviews and travels either my mum, dad or even both of them would have to come with me. One because I asked them too, being new to all of this I didn’t want to get lost in the craziness of the music life and also they wanted to make sure I didn’t get up to anything which was dangerous. But yeah now that I’m 18 I can go travelling on my own and to interviews and be more independent but I still sometimes take my dad or mum along for moral support.

Q: With the tour, where are you most excited to go?

Elliot: I can’t really decided, being new to all of this I can’t wait to get out there and see the world, living in the UK and not really travelling much I can’t wait, the list of locations if long and amazing, the first stop is France and then onto Germany.

Q:  Now some Questions from our readers, Do you have any tattoos?

Elliot: No, um yeah being the son of a pastor and having a religious family, they allowed me to have a guitar which was on the borderline for them so tattoos would be too much for them.

Q: When you were younger, did you ever do anything which got you into trouble?

Elliot: Yes, and I’m very ashamed of it, I was caught smoking by my dad when I was 14 years old. It was very immature and stupid of me, he was angry and I was ashamed of myself, it was my first and last cigarette.

Q: Do you have a girlfriend?

Elliot: Um no not right now, I did used to go out with someone and we had a pretend wedding, we were both 6.

Updated: Front Cover, DPS and Contents Layout Designs

I've previously uploaded some layout designs for the contents page and double page spread but not the front cover. By using a similar style to Q I want my magazine to be clean and look sophisticated and professional so the front cover had to be simple, the main focus would be the photo. For the contents page then the main focus would be the contents and for the double page spread the photo and the interview.

Below are the designs I have come up with, I will soon narrow the layouts down to my chosen three.

Front Cover

One of the front cover layouts include coverlines the other doesn't, the one without I decided that the main focus was the photo and the coverlines would perhaps be distracting but I think I need to have the photo presented first before I come to a decision.

Contents Page

This is an updated contents page, the previous designs had included many images on the page but when studying Q magazine (inspiration) it only included one or two important images on the contents page, however I have come to my full decision just yet.

Double Page Spread

This was the first layout design for the Double Page spread which I previously posted, the image had a single page to itself, gainign full attention from the readers and the interview was contained to one page.

With this design it had two photos which would feature the person who was being interviewed and the interview would be broken up.

Treatment Sheet

The Treatment

The Magazine: Unplugged

Target Readership: Unplugged is aimed at mature older teenagers from the age of 16 to adults aged 30. The parents of the readers or the readers themselves will come in the C1/C2 socioeconomic grouping; however the readers of Unplugged will hardly rely on their parents for finance. With most of the readers they will be working either part time or full time. With Unplugged readers they will have a job and so with Q it is a magazine which they can pick up and take to work, read on breaks or on the way home. The busy days they have going to and from work, they may find it hard to catch up on the current music news and updates so with Q they can find it easier to keep in touch with their music side and check up on their favourite artists or bands.

Form and Style: Unplugged is a plain white A4 magazine which will focus on the chosen genre of music (Rock and Indie), it will include interviews with famous and well known artists but also upcoming artists from the younger generation such as teenagers. Also reviews on current albums, news on artists and bands and updates on latest concerts. With Unplugged, the use of less colours shows to the targeted audience that Unplugged is a confident, clean and sophisticated magazine which doesn’t need streams of colours to attract their audience. On the front cover, Unplugged with feature an already famous male or female artist or band or however they may feature an upcoming artist or band which Unplugged feels they have what it takes. The front cover will not be over crowded with unwanted information such as KERRANG; with Unplugged it has the focus image of the band or artist, the masthead, no coverlines or perhaps strapline. It needs to show that the main aspect of the front cover is the photo. The magazine will be priced at £3.50, highly priced due to the required professional paper for the magazine but also for the size of the magazine, it will feature 160 – 170 pages so the readers will be getting their money’s worth.

Themes and Typical Features: With the readers being busy working all day, Unplugged offers a way for them to relax and catch up with any music news they have missed, it will feature artist and band updates and interviews, news on current music events, concerts or festivals which are coming up, recommended music for different moods, top 50 or top 100 list, pictures and quotes from their favourite artists or bands. The magazine is about giving the readers a chance to keep up to date with the music world and not to be left behind, they may not have time to surf the internet or go flicking through the TV channels when they get back from work but with Unplugged it is only £3.50 and they will have all the current music news they need. With featured artist and band interviews as well as upcoming artist and bands the readers can read up on their favourite artist/band.

Potential Advertisers: Within Unplugged magazine a range of shops and items will be advertised, less on the clothes and make up and more on the side of HMV (CD’S and offers which can only be claimed by using the code found inside Unplugged magazine). Also online sites such as Amazon and Play.com, which will advertise music, posters and merchandise. No ringtones but there will be concert information and also a competition for the reader to win a pair of concert tickets for one of the featured artists/bands.

Editorial Team: The editorial team for Unplugged will have both male and female so the magazine is not bias towards a certain gender, but also offers both sides for the readers. The team will be made up of music lovers and experienced writers but also creative designers. The age of the team members will be from ages 20 – 30, close to the reader’s ages. The team will be asked to provide their ideas and views on certain subjects.

Font Choice for Masthead

With the masthead it is important to have a font which represents the entire magazine, so with a metal music magazine such as METAL HAMMER the font would be very jagged with sharp edges, mostly showing a dangerous and angry look for the magazine.
Example of Metal music magazine font

Very gothic with sharp edges, however I'm not doing a metal music magazine, I'm doing a rock music magazine so the font needs to be either similar to KERRANG or if I don't wish to very stereotypical with my font I could go with a more serif style font like Q.

Example of KERRANG style font magazine

With this font it gives off a printed effect, but also like paint has been splattered against it, the edges are as sharp as the metal music font, softer.

Example of Q style magazine font

With this font it is a serif font so it is a thin style of font with sharp clean edges, very professional and sophisticated.

My magazine is going to be similar to the style of Q magazine so I'm going to probably aim more for the sophisticated and clean font for the Masthead.

Name Of Magazine is....

The name of my magazine is UNPLUGGED

Even when I'm using similar styles to Q magazine where they use less colours, more white and a simple palette, hardly any photos on the contents page and just seem more clean and professional looking I see that the name UNPLUGGED is very direct and snappy. It may not be one letter like Q, I mean I could have called it V Magazine but then that wouldn't have seem very musical, more of a female magazine then. With UNPLUGGED it seems very sophiticated, not too mature but yet not too young and immature. The targeted audience I am aiming for with this magazine is around the ages of 16 - 30 year olds (mature older teenagers to 30 year olds).

Colour Palette For Magazine

This is just a basic colour palette, the less colours I used the better in my opinion (similar to Q). Below are just a few colours I'm going to be using.

Readership Figures 2008 - 2010

Below are graphs which I constructed to show the change of 3 major music magazines from 2008 - 2010

A Quick Version of the Graphs put together

From this I can see that KERRANG when compared to a magazine such as Mojo or Q has very low ratings in terms of readership. Whereas Q and Mojo are neck and neck with each other and are usually off by a few thousand. Going on the findings I have researched I would say that Q would seem to be the magazine style I would like to go with rather than KARRANG, with KARRANG is is aimed at teenagers and so is Q but Q is aimed at more mature teenagers to adults.

The style of Q is very sophiticated and confident, they use a simple and basic colour palette of few colours to show they don't need to use so many colours to attract their audience but the contents, usually featuring a famous artist or band on the front to entrigue their audience as well.

Now I won't be able to get hold of anyone like Rihanna so my photo on the front cover will have to be of a teenager either playing an instrument or simply sitting their, it is hard to get hold of someone like this so that is one of my biggest challenges, get the photos taken, edited and done.

Here are the sites I used to get my information for the graphs

Textual Analysis: 3 Front Covers, 2 Contents Pages, 1 DPS

Front Cover

KERRANG - February 2007 Issue
- Masthead (Kerrang) hidden behind the main photo on the front cover (usually a band or artist). Shows the main focus of the front cover is not the Masthead but the photo of the featured band or artist.
- Photo (Band: Fall Out Boy) Large, two band members are looking at the camera, direct to the audience, recognisable with genre (Rock).
- Strapline features other bands and artists featured in the magazine, known and popular bands/artists for the audience to read more on.
- Smaller photos of the magazine contents (Blink 182 featured on the front, white outline for the box to separate it from the rest of the darkened background of the main photo).
- Colour palette for the front cover is very dark, dark tones used mainly blacks and browns, some contrasting colours for the text or the bottom strapline to highlight them on the front cover.
- Text for the Fall Out Boy contrasts with the colour scheme for the front cover, bright white against the darkened photo, allows it to stand out.
- Masthead - the colour palette for the masthead text is the opposite (contrasts) to the background of the masthead; the background is white whereas the text is black, stands out (even when we can't see most of it due to the photo hiding it).
- Front Cover is busy, packed with photos and information, the main focus on the front cover is the photo of the two members from Fall out Boy.

Q - January 2010 issue

- Masthead is a single lettter so it shows confidence, the magazine shows that it doesn't need a long name for the cover but just a since word. The colour palette for the masthead are contrasting colours which benifit each other to stand out, the striking red background against the white Q means the first thing which the audience would perhaps focus on would be the Masthead, it is made to pop from the front cover.
- Photo on the front cover features various famous, popular and talented artists who the audience would be fans of, we have a range of differnet genres presented on the front cover from Rock to Rap. The photo is a fold in which continues across three pages, so even more artists are shown within the fold out front cover. With a fold out front cover it is something a little differnet to what a normal front cover of a magazine would be like, interests the audience.
- Strapline on the front cover reads, ‘THE UK’S BIGGEST MUSIC MAGAZINE’ so we can see that the magazine is popular, supported by the cover photo which features powerful, popular and talented artists who wouldn’t of posed for the cover if they didn’t believe in the magazine. The colour palette for the strapline is a simple white text against a plain background, simple but sophisticated.
- The Colour palette for the whole front cover (minus the photo) only features a small numbers of colours (red, black and white). This shows a more clean, simple but also professional design, it shows to me that the magazine feel they don't need a million different colours to make their cover seem more interesting, the front cover is all about the photo on front and even then the photo features a few bright colours but most of the artists are dressed in dark toned clothes, as they are presented against a mid light grey background.
- Text on the front cover is Serif text, is has a mature look to it, the font colour is black so again sticking to a simple desing, Q doesn't wish to use many different types to interest their audience, they feel that simple look more professional and clean.
- From the Front Cover I would say that the targeted audience for Q would be more mature older teenagers to any age beyond older teenagers. The whole clean and professional look shows to me that it is more Indie music, less pop and hip hop and more rock and roll music as it features artists like Pink, Greenday, Paul McCartney and  Bono.
- There seems to be no cover lines shown on Q’s front cover, again showing that they don’t need snippets from articles to entice the audience, they simply have the sophisticated photo of the many artists to do that.

Metal Hammer - January 2010 Issue

- Masterhead is similar to KERRANG as it is partly hidden behind the featured image on the cover, the masthead also features the word ‘Metal’ on the letter H so already we can see that this magazine is targeted at people who are fans of Metal music.

- Photo on the front cover features a male artist (not familiar with him) but his use of facial expressions shows a angry attitude which some can associate with how Metal bands and artists act when performing, they use a lot of anger to express themselves.
- The Strapline on the front cover promotes an article inside the magazines, the colour palette for the text is flames and so it stands out against the black background of the front cover, our eyes are drawn to contrasting colours such as the bright colours of the flames in the text.
- The colour palette for the whole cover is similar to KERRANG again, it is however more dark, less colours used and no small photos which show the articles featured inside, and the main focus on the front cover is the man in the middle. Most of the text is either white, silver, flamed yellow or red, keeping it to small colour palette used. Hardly any bright colours shown on the front cover, apart from the flames within the text, the man featured on the front doesn’t have a bright t-shirt on, instead he has a black and white shirt on, sticking with the dark tones and deep colours on the front cover.
- The cover lines featured on the front are scattered all along the sides, such as the ones about the band are focused near the top of the front cover whereas the other articles cover lines are at the bottom right hand corner of the cover and in much smaller text. We can see the importance of the cover lines about the bands and artists due to them being in silver font and being much larger than the other cover lines.
- The whole front cover to me shows that it is a metal music magazine, from the colours used (black, whites, flamed yellows, etc) and also from the image of the angry artist on the front. If I were a metal music fan then I would be interested by this front cover is contains the needed cover lines and the Masthead which would entice me to buy it.

Contents Page

Q Magazine

- The colour palette for the contents page is similar to the front cover, red, white, black and grey so we can see that even inside the magazine it looks clean, simple a sophisticated.
- The text on the contents page is again simple serif font (sleek and professional). The colour of the font is red, white or black. Some sections of the text have been bolded (highlighted) to stand out more to the audience’s eye.
- The photos on the contents page feature articles in the magazine, little luring snippets which make the audience want to read on. It also shows a double page spread from the next issue, this would get the audience interested and make them want to buy the magazine again.
- The background of the contents page is a plain white, very simple, clean and professional looking. Other backgrounds such as the heading at the top of the page with the large Q is like the front cover a intense block red, it is striking and hard to miss, the audience’s eyes would be drawn to it. The use of the contrasting colour for the heading background and the page background allows the page to be more fresh (white always makes colours look more fresh and intense) so the intensity of the red allows the page to stand out.
- The headline at the top of the page features the large white thick Q with ‘Contents’ presented next to it in a plain black serif font. With the background of the heading (intense red) allows the black font to be more striking and visible to the audience’s eyes. The heading background also has a thick black outline around the box so this helps to separate the intense red background from the plain white background of the entire page.
- The layout of the contents page is neat and well organised, all the information given on the page is presented in boxes. Such as the list of articles and their pages is presented in a dark grey box, the headline is in a rectangle at the top of the page. The next issue is at the side of the contents page, and any other information is organised at the bottom of the page, it isn’t thrown around but simple which shows that Q doesn’t need a crazy layout for their contents page, the main focus of this page are the articles listed, not the layout.

KERRANG

- The colour palette is very basic, using dark toned colours such as red and black for the font and background for heading and subheading. The colour for the font in the heading and subheading is white to contrast with the dark tones of the red and the black. With the photos they have a range of colours but still nothing too bright and bold, just similar dark tones and the main picture which features a woman is presented in black and white so once again a plain, basic colour palette.
- The font is sans serif which shows that it is a little more care free, with the articles listed at the right hand side of the page, the subheadings for them (categories the articles come under) are bolded (highlighted) and in a deep red colour, contrasting it with the white bright background.
- The photos feature different band members and artists who the audience may be fans off, the size of the three pictures at the top are the same sizes, they are there to lure the audience into reading more of the magazine. The large image (more importance since it is larger than the others) features a woman (artists).
- The background is a plain bright white background so with the contrasting dark toned colours of the photos and the text they are highlighted more due to the intensity of the white background.

- The layout of the page is very basic; the lists of articles are featured at the right hand side of the page, with the photo of the woman on the other side, the 3 photos above all in a perfect line and the heading above. The layout would be seen as a typical magazine layout, usually for more photos used than text.

METAL HAMMER

- The colour palette is a mixture, apart from the pictures the colour palette is very basic with only black and red being used for the text as well as white in the editor’s letter.
- The font for the text is both serif and sans serif (editor’s letter), for the list of articles the subheadings are presented in a unique font (metal font and in black) with serif font below, the use of serif font makes it look more sleek as well as gothic for the metal music.
- The photos on the page feature a mixture of intense dark toned colours of artists from metal bands; most of the contents page is taken up by the photo so I would say that for this magazine photos are an important factor for the contents page. The photos also feature the numbers of the page that the photo is originally featured on, this gives more help to the audience, it is a visual help for them, they can easy look at the images and find the page.
- The background on the contents page is a white colour but it has a visual texture to it, it looks like scrunched up paper which has also been dirtied up a little, so it gives this grunge look to the contents page which relates to the music (metal).

Double Page Spread

Q Magazine

With the double page we feature two pages, one has the text, the other a large 1 page photo of the person, in this case Rihanna.

1st Page

- The colour palette for the page is simple; the colour of the text is red, white or black (going with the same style as the contents page). Some of the text has been bolded to be highlighted for importance, such as important quotes from the interview as well as at the top of the page, Rihanna’s name has been bolded to stand out more.
- Some of the text has been coloured red to highlight them as they stand out from the rest of the black coloured text, only important words have been highlight in red, not a lot but a couple.
- The font is serif to be sleek, sophisticated and professional looking which links with what Q magazine is. Some of the text has been put into italic writing, such as the subheading under the heading, ‘Rihanna’.
- The background for the page is clean and white, the background is just canvas, no focus has been placed on it, it is simply their to make the text on this page seem more fresh and striking to the audience.
- The section where it described how Rihanna’s decade has gone and the awards she has won has been placed in a dark black box with the font in white, with it being in black it stands out more and also highlights this section as being important to the article.

2nd Page

- The photo of Rihanna, she is wearing dark toned clothes to she can stand out more against the white/grey background behind her. The main focus is of course her and so with her unusual angle and posture she is automatically drawn to, we focus on her because of her usual posture and dark clothes.
- The small white text in the right hand top corner is placed over a semi white/grey background so it is just able to be seen, it is the caption, explaining the photo so usually they do have it very small, it is not that important.
- The fact that Rihanna is the only one in the shot shows confidence, her clothes show style and her posture shows flexiblity and talent. How she stands, dresses is all to impress her fans.
